Non woven bag GSM: how to choose the right weight

GSM is the weight of the bag fabric. It decides how the bag feels, how much it carries, and how long it lasts. This guide shows you how to pick the right one.

Every non woven bag has a GSM number. It stands for grams per square metre: the weight of one square metre of the fabric the bag is made from. A higher GSM means a thicker, stronger fabric. A lower GSM means a thinner, lighter one. When you compare non woven bag GSM between two quotes, you are comparing the fabric itself, not just the price.

Think of it like paper. A visiting card is thicker than a notebook page, and you feel the difference at once. Bag fabric works the same way. The GSM decides whether the bag feels light and crisp or thick and sturdy in the customer’s hand.

CarryPlus makes bags from 30 to 180 GSM in our facility in Al Ansab, Muscat. Most shops never need the full range. They need the right weight for their job, and this guide helps you find it.

Non woven bags made by CarryPlus in Oman, from light counter bags to sturdy reusable shoppers

What non woven bag GSM actually measures

GSM measures fabric weight, not quality. A 40 GSM bag is not worse than a 120 GSM bag. It is simply made for a different job. The 40 GSM bag is light and low cost, right for a pharmacy counter where the bag carries a small box of medicine home. The 120 GSM bag is thick and reusable, right for a boutique that wants the bag to feel premium.

Two bags can share the same size, colour and print and still feel completely different because of GSM. When a buyer says a bag feels cheap or feels premium, they are usually describing the fabric weight.

Which GSM for which job

As a rough guide, light counter bags sit around 30 to 60 GSM. These are thin bags for pharmacies, mobile shops and quick packing at a till. They cost less per bag and do the job when the load is light.

The middle range, around 70 to 110 GSM, is the workhorse. Daily supermarket and grocery bags live here: strong enough for a full shop, light enough to keep the cost sensible. Most of the bags we make for Oman shops fall in this band, and 80 GSM is the industry standard most buyers start from.

Heavy bags, 120 to 180 GSM, are the sturdy reusable shoppers. Boutiques, gift shops and electronics stores pick these when the bag itself should feel like part of the brand. They last longer and survive many reuses.

These are starting points, not rules. The right weight also depends on the bag style. A D cut pharmacy bag and a loop handle boutique shopper at the same GSM feel different, because the construction is different.

How GSM affects price and feel

More GSM means more fabric in every bag, so the cost per bag goes up with the weight. That is the main trade-off. A heavier bag feels better and lasts longer, but you pay for the extra material on every single piece.

This is why matching GSM to the job matters. A pharmacy ordering 200 kgs of bags does not need boutique weight. A boutique does not want its brand carried in tissue-thin fabric. The right GSM is the lightest weight that still does the job well.

We never print prices on the site, because the price depends on style, size, GSM, print and quantity together. Message us on WhatsApp with your details and we quote your exact order.

GSM is not the whole story

Two more things decide how strong a bag feels. First, the seams. Heat-sealed edges and box-stitched handles carry the load, and we seal and stitch the stress points on every bag. Second, the style. A gusseted bag with a flat base carries boxy items better than a flat bag at the same GSM.

So treat GSM as the starting point. Tell us what the bag will carry and how it will be used, and we put the full picture together: weight, style, size and stitching.

How to choose: start with the load

The simplest way to pick: picture the heaviest thing the bag will carry, and how many times the bag should be reused. Light medicine box, one trip home: light GSM. Full grocery run, weekly reuse: middle GSM. A gift bag that advertises your shop for months: heavy GSM.

Then message us on WhatsApp. Tell us the shop type, what goes in the bag, and the size you have in mind. We suggest the weight and the style, and you approve everything before we run the order. Minimum order is 200 kgs. Delivery in 1 to 4 days, all over Oman.
